Traffickers and Recruiting Methods

Traffickers are often:

  • members of well established criminal networks
  • peers of the youth experiencing trafficking
  • family members

In many cases:

  • the person is recruited by someone they know
  • traffickers are of the same nationality as their victim

Traffickers recruit people and force them to stay through:

  • fear
  • debt bondage
  • dependency and isolation
  • shame and guilt

Recruitment happens in schools, over the Internet, while hitchhiking, through gangs (which offer a sense of belonging), boyfriends and girlfriends.
